Supporting Sustainable Communities

Your sustainability goals, simplified.
The Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council (NOPEC) has been a leading innovator in coalitions solving problems in the energy economy for over 20 years. We currently serve over 200 member communities in 20 Ohio counties and source energy for hundreds of thousands residential utility and small business utility accounts. We also provide member communities a variety of benefit programs to enhance the life of their residents and the vitality of their businesses by providing resources for small commercial entities and municipalities to reduce their overall carbon footprint and lower their energy costs.
Our Mission
Aggregate
We support clean and renewable energy resources in our electric aggregation.
Educate
We educate our community officials, residents, and small businesses on ways to reduce their carbon footprint.
Advocate
We advocate for legislation and administration of Ohio's utilities to make it even easier and more affordable to be sustainable.
NOPEC's Commitment to Sustainability
We are extremely proud of our collective organizational efforts to support sustainability and renewable energy development and very excited to offer more options and resources for our member communities to do the same.
NOPEC residential and small business customers can choose to sign up for a number of sustainable NOPEC offers, including 1- and 2-year fixed-term products with Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for 100% of energy usage.
NOPEC has retired more than 9.65 million EarthEra RECs, which represents the environmental attributes associated with the generation of more than 9.65 million MWhs of renewable energy — enough electricity to power ~900,000 average Ohio residential homes for an entire year.1
(1) EIA published data from forms EIA-861- schedules 4A-D, EIA-861S and EIA-861U. 2021 Average Residential Ohio monthly consumption 879 kWh (or 0.88 MWh)

Community Programming & Energy Efficiency Initiatives

NOPEC Preferred Pricing Green Energy Program
The NOPEC Preferred Pricing Green Energy Program is an opportunity for NOPEC communities to buy 100% green and renewable electricity, via 100% renewable energy credits, for their municipal loads at cost. It's our absolute best pricing, and it can serve as a building block for a much larger sustainability agenda.
In 2021, the City of Lakewood became the first community to take advantage of the program and supply all its municipal facilities and streetlights with 100% green and renewable energy, via 100% renewable energy credits.

Green Ribbon Award
The NOPEC Green Ribbon Awardrecognizes the outstanding achievements of member communities who have completed projects to reduce their municipality's energy footprint. By celebrating best practices in energy efficiency and innovation, NOPEC hopes to encourage communities to participate in energy sustainability initiatives to create a brighter future for their residents for years to come.
Investing in Sustainability & Economic Development

NOPEC Energized Community Grant
The NOPEC Energized Community (NEC) Grant is a funding opportunity available to all NOPEC member communities to help them increase energy efficiency and upgrade energy infrastructure. Since 2010, NOPEC has awarded approximately $48 million in energy-efficiency grants to our member communities.

Energy Efficiency Financing
Up-front, fixed-rate financing options for energy-efficiency projects allows commercial property owners to use the savings generated by improvements to help pay back the loan.
Together, we're building a brighter future.
- Maintain robust and fair deregulated retail energy markets in Ohio.
- Ensure competitive, diverse and resilient generation.
- Restore impactful renewable energy standards.
- Eliminate guaranteed recovery of revenues for electric utilities regardless of weather or economic conditions.
- Support policies that are fair to all Ohio utility consumers.
