Derek Cluse
Chief Financial Officer
Describe your prior experience working in the nonprofit, government, and/or public service fields.
My prior experience in the nonprofit sector spans 25 years, including roles as CFO for a charter school developer and operator for six years, business operations leader for traditional school districts for 12 years, and Deputy CFO for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for two years. Most recently, I served as CFO and Chief of Staff for Step Forward, the designated Community Action Agency in Cuyahoga County.
Why did you decide to join the NOPEC team?
I joined NOPEC because I was drawn to its mission to empower communities through energy aggregation, advocacy, and education. I was also moved by the character and authenticity of the leadership team during the search process; I saw that the role and organization were a great fit. The opportunity to apply my financial leadership in a role that directly improves the quality of life for residents across Northeast Ohio deeply resonated with my values and professional purpose.
Describe your role at NOPEC and how you hope to help NOPEC communities in the future.
As Chief Financial Officer for NOPEC, my role is to ensure the organization's financial stability, transparency, and strategic alignment with its mission. I will oversee financial reporting, budgeting, financial planning, investments, and risk management to support sound decision-making and long-term sustainability. My goal is to help strengthen NOPEC's capacity to deliver value to its member communities. Looking ahead, I hope to help NOPEC expand its impact by leveraging data, financial innovation, stewardship, and partnerships to drive even greater benefits for the communities we serve.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
My free time is mostly for relaxing. I do that by listening to music, cooking, hiking the trail system in the National Park, and gardening. Family time is important to me, so I take every opportunity I can to spend quality time with my wife and children.
