Q&A with Craig Brown

Meet NOPEC's new Relationship Manager

Craig Brown

Relationship Manager

Describe your prior experience working in the nonprofit, government, and/or public service fields.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough to be employed in many capacities to make meaningful contributions for the betterment of people and communities. During college at Ohio Dominican University, I worked in the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate. Following my completion of a graduate degree at the University of Akron, I worked with Appalachian at-risk youth, taught classes as an adjunct/assistant lecturer, and successfully sought election twice to countywide office. While continuing my work in higher education, my students and I initiated an effort in Ohio to designate the seventh day in October as Moses Fleetwood Walker Day, kindling discussions about his contribution integrating athletics and his place in the larger civil rights movement. My career path also led me to a position coordinating an Americorps RSVP program working with senior citizens. Most of my recent career has been spent at the Brooke Hancock Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission (BHJ-MPC), an organization with responsibilities as both a planning commission and a council of governments. There, I had roles in community development and economic development finishing as community planning director.

Why did you decide to join the NOPEC team?

During my time with BHJ-MPC, I became interested in the roles both private and public organizations have in creating resilient and sustainable communities. I firmly believe NOPEC has an important role to play in helping create better futures for Ohioans.

Describe your role at NOPEC and how you hope to help NOPEC communities in the future.

My role at NOPEC is to foster and create rewarding relationships between community representatives and NOPEC. As a trusted resource, I want to help elected officials better serve their constituents and create stronger communities.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I am fortunate enough to be the father of two sons and the husband of a wonderful spouse. Most of my time is spent at the sporting events of my youngest son or trying to maintain our home.
