Through Renewable Energy Credit (REC) backed electric options and supporting our member communities through energy resiliency programs, we continue to put effort into creating a more sustainable energy industry in Ohio. To better understand how NOPEC supports renewable energy, it helps to first understand the role Renewable Energy Credits play in the energy market.
What is A REC?
The Renewable Energy Credit is a tradeable certificate that represents environmental benefits of electricity generated through renewable energy sources. These include solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal sources.
A REC represents a specific amount of these environmental benefits, which typically equates to about one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy generation. Because RECs can be bought and sold separately from the actual electricity, businesses and individuals can support renewable energy even if they are not directly connected to a green energy facility.
Since 2017, NOPEC has retired over 12 million RECs, meaning we have backed roughly 12 million MWh of renewable energy generation.
