As colder days approach and energy costs climb, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) is ensuring that Ohioans have access to some relief this winter. This September, the PUCO announced its Special Reconnect Order for the 2025/26 heating season; a lifeline for Ohio families experiencing high utility bills. But what is the Special Reconnect Order, and how could it make a real difference for Ohio’s energy consumers? Let’s explore how this program is designed to keep the heat on and provide peace of mind when it matters most.
The Basics of the Special Reconnect Order
Starting on October 13, 2025, and running through April 15, 2026, Ohio residents served by PUCO-regulated utilities will be able to keep their homes connected to the utility for just $175, plus a reconnection of up to $36, if needed. This helpful program is open to all Ohio residents, no matter your income. The program is designed to keep residents connected to the utility who otherwise may not have been able to pay their monthly bill.
How This Program Can Help You
Last year, the Special Reconnect Order made a huge impact by helping over 200,000 Ohioans keep their homes warm, many of whom might have otherwise faced a frigid winter without heat. As the furnace demands more energy in peak winter months, energy bills can quickly become overwhelming. Thanks to the Special Reconnect Order, however, thousands of families across Ohio can breathe easier knowing they can stay safely connected for a flat fee of $175, plus a possible $36 reconnection charge.
Saving money during the heating season
The winter season puts high demand on the energy grid as many homes run their furnace consistently for months on end. Here are some tips to keep the energy bill manageable during the heating season:

-
Turn down the thermostat at night
-
Having guests over? Keep the temperature lower as body heat will warm the room
-
Identify drafty windows and doors to seal them to improve insulation
-
Try to avoid the use of space heaters – they use a lot of energy!
-
Ensure your thermostat is placed in an area that is not affected by external temperature
