Q&A with Ben Holbert

Meet NOPEC's new Cuyahoga County Board Representative

Ben Holbert

Cuyahoga County Board Representative

Mayor, Village of Woodmere

Describe your prior experience working in the nonprofit, government, and/or public service fields.

Serving as Mayor of the Village of Woodmere is one of the greatest honors of my life. Though we're a small community, we're active, engaged, and committed to progress. My focus has always been on public safety, economic development, and improving residents' quality of life.

My journey in public service began at Kent State University, where I was elected to Undergraduate Student Government. I also served as Second Vice District Representative of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity for Ohio and West Virginia and was recently selected to lead the Voter Registration, Education, and Mobilization Committee for the same region.

I was proud to be part of the Leadership Cleveland Class of 2020, and later participated in the Executive Leadership Development Experience at Case Western Reserve University, a six-month leadership cohort focused on challenges facing minority executives.

Professionally, I've served as:

  • Interim Chief of Communications for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District
  • Communications Director for Cuyahoga County
  • Senior Partnership Specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau
  • Public Information Officer for the Cleveland Metroparks Rangers

Currently, I serve on the Board of Trustees for Senior Transportation Connection, advocating for seniors' mobility, and chair the Collaborations Committee of the Cuyahoga County Mayors and City Managers Association, where I work with peers to address regional issues.

Before entering public office, I spent over 20 years in TV and radio journalism—work that sharpened my ability to communicate clearly, listen actively, and build trust.

Public service, for me, is about listening, showing up, and solving problems with integrity.

What drew you to NOPEC's Board of Directors?

I was nominated by South Euclid Mayor Georgine Welo, who felt I would be a strong voice for Cuyahoga County as she transitions off the NOPEC Board. I'm honored by the opportunity.

How would you like to help NOPEC communities in the future?

As a mayor and elected official, I hope to advocate for NOPEC's projects and policies, and help communicate initiatives that benefit local governments, consumers, and families throughout the service area.
